WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Derek Austin poured in 23 points and Troy Mengel had 10 points and 10 rebounds to lift the Stratford boys basketball team to a 48-31 win over Wisconsin Rapids Assumption in a Marawood Conference South Division game Friday at Assumption High School.
Austin made 9 of 10 free throws and had five steals in the win, which allows the Tigers to keep pace with Auburndale for first place in the Marawood South at 6-0. Stratford improves to 9-2 overall. The Tigers play a nonconference game at Abbotsford on Thursday before a showdown at Auburndale on Jan. 17.
After a sluggish first quarter which saw Stratford take a 5-4 lead, the Tigers outscored Assumption (5-6, 3-3 Marawood South) 26-18 over the middle two quarters to surge ahead.
Overall, the Tigers made 18 of 24 free throws and had 12 steals in the victory.
