Third-quarter run lifts Wausau Newman Catholic past Stratford girls basketball

STRATFORD – The Stratford girls basketball team held its own against the defending WIAA Division 5 state champions, holding a two-point halftime lead, but a huge third quarter lifted Wausau Newman Catholic to a 54-42 victory over the Tigers on Tuesday night at Stratford High School.

Stratford led 25-23 at the half before the Cardinals rolled to a 21-6 third quarter to take control.

Newman improves to 9-1 and 5-0 in the conference, moving into a tie for first place with Wisconsin Rapids Assumption. Stratford drops to 7-2 and 3-2 in the Marawood South. Stratford hosts Assumption on Thursday.

Hannah Schmitt had 15 points and 18 rebounds for Stratford. Kelsey Boeger added 12 points and Brooke Schultze had 11 rebounds.

Stratford stayed in the game by making 22 of 28 free throws and holding Newman to just 18 of 69 shooting from the field.

Sarah Connolly scored 23 points for the Cardinals.
