Auburndale girls basketball team wins defensive battle over Stratford

STRATFORD – Auburndale pulled away in the second half to beat Stratford in a defensive battle 32-24 in a Marawood Conference South Division girls basketball contest Thursday night at Stratford High School.

Auburndale led 12-11 at halftime, then outscored the Tigers 20-13 in the second half to earn the victory and win its fourth straight Marawood South game and improve to 8-4 and 5-2 in the conference.

Stratford lost for the fourth straight time and falls to 7-5 and 3-4 in the Marawood South.

Defense dominated the game with neither team shooting above 35 percent. Auburndale made just 14 of 46 shots (30.4 percent), while Stratford was just 10 of 29 (34 percent).

Sam Karl and Nicole Nikolay scored seven points each to lead Auburndale. Nikolay added eight rebounds and Becky Willfahrt had seven boards and four steals.

Hannah Schmitt had 10 points for Stratford to lead all scorers and added eight rebounds. Brooke Schultze had five points and seven rebounds for the Tigers.

Both teams return to action Tuesday with nonconference road games. Stratford will play at Abbotsford and Auburndale will travel to Rib Lake for a pair of Marawood crossover games.
