STEVENS POINT – Taylor Smola scored off an offensive rebound with 2 seconds left in overtime to lift the Stevens Point Area Senior High girls basketball to a 37-35 win over Marshfield on Friday night at Marshfield High School.

SPASH improves to 14-1 overall and 7-1 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, tying Marshfield (11-4, 7-1 WVC) for first place in the conference and ending the Tigers’ 54-game winning streak in the WVC and their 11-game win streak against Stevens Point.

Marshfield trailed 21-16 at halftime before taking a five-point lead late in the fourth quarter. The Panthers rallied to tie the game at 31-31 at the end of regulation.

The Tigers turned the ball over with about 30 seconds to go and forced a jump ball with 8 seconds left, but SPASH held the possession arrow and kept possession. Smola rebounded a miss and scored inside with 2 seconds to go. Marshfield called timeout and Taylor Varsho missed a half-court heave at the buzzer.

Marshfield had a rough game shooting, making just 11 of 43 shots from the field and 3 of 16 shots from 3-point range.

Varsho led the Tigers with 11 point and Caitlin Michaelis added nine.

Marshfield returns home next week for a pair of games – Tuesday against Eau Claire North and Friday against D.C. Everest.
