Marshfield girls hockey whips Lakeland, extends win streak to five

MINOCQUA – The Marshfield girls hockey team suddenly finds itself in a race for the Great Northern Conference championship.

The Tigers rolled Lakeland 9-0 on Monday night to improve to 7-0-1 in their last nine games overall, and 8-0-1 in their last nine GNC games to move to 11-5-1 overall and 8-2-1 in the conference.

Point-Rapids stands at 9-2, with Marshfield and Northland Pines tied at 8-2-1 following Monday’s games.

The Great Northern Conference season wraps up Friday with all three teams playing different opponents. Marshfield hosts Medford, while Point-Rapids plays at Tomahawk and Northern Pines plays at the Northern Edge. The Tigers would need a tie or a loss by Point-Rapids to squeeze into the top spot in the conference.

In Monday’s game, the Tigers made quick work of Lakeland, scoring five goals in the first period.

Jala Zach scored 1:42 into the game and added another goal at the 12:28 mark to get Marshfield going. Hailey Draxler, Nicole Karl and Nell Eichten each added goals in the first period for the Tigers.

Zahn completed the hat trick with a goal in the second period, coming just 1:06 after a goal by Bailey Jozwiak. Emily Wolfe and Paige Johnson each added a goal in the third period to finish the scoring.

Draxler and Karl each had two assists for Marshfield.

Marshfield goalie Alexis Straughan only had to make 16 saves to earn the shutout.

Lakeland goalie Tori Parus made 43 saves in the loss.
