AUBURNDALE – Nicole Nikolay scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Auburndale, but Wisconsin Rapids Assumption was able to squeak out a 26-21 defensive battle in a Marawood Conference South Division girls basketball game Tuesday at Auburndale High School.

Nikolay was 5 of 14 shooting for the Apaches, but the rest of the team was just 2 of 22 and the Royals made 8 of 12 free throws to earn the win.

Assumption improves to 15-1 and 9-1 in the Marawood South, while Auburndale falls to 11-5 and 7-3 in the conference. The Apaches had won eight of their last nine games.

Mary Sigler had 12 points to lead the Royals. Assumption struggled equally from the field, making just 9 of 36 shots, and was outrebounded 30-19 but held an 8-4 advantage from the free-throw line which provided most of the scoring difference.

Auburndale returns to action Friday when it hosts first-place Wausau Newman Catholic.
