MINOCQUA – The Marshfield boys basketball team won its fifth straight game and for the eighth time in its last nine games, beating Lakeland 50-37 in a nonconference matchup Tuesday night at Lakeland High School.
The red-hot Tigers improve to 13-5 and knock Lakeland to 12-6 on the season.
Elliot Ashbeck had his seventh straight game of 22 points or more, scoring 22 in the Tigers’ win. He again was able to cash in from the free-throw line, making 12 of 17. Ashbeck added a team-high 12 rebounds and three assists as well.
Ashbeck, averaging 21.1 points per game this season, has 868 career points and is just 16 points away from passing Rich Rust (1987-90) for sixth place on Marshfield’s all-time scoring list. He stands 33 points behind former teammate Cale Zuiker (2008-11) for fifth on the list.
Ben Satter had four points and 10 rebounds and Luke Zuiker added eight points for Marshfield.
Marshfield returns to Wisconsin Valley Conference action Friday at first-place D.C. Everest. The Evergreens (16-1, 8-0 WVC) own a 1½-game lead over the Tigers and won the teams’ first meeting in double overtime at Marshfield on Jan. 6.
