WESTON – D.C. Everest needed double overtime to knock off Marshfield in a game last month, but on Friday night, the Evergreens didn’t have as much trouble.
D.C. Everest outscored Marshfield 21-9 in the first quarter and 16-2 in the fourth to beat the Tigers 64-39 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys basketball game at D.C. Everest High School.
D.C. Everest clinches at least a tie for the WVC title, improving to 17-1 overall and 9-0 in the conference with three games remaining. Marshfield had its five-game winning streak snapped and falls to 13-6 and 7-3 in the Valley.
Elliot Ashbeck had his streak of seven straight 20-point games snapped as he led the Tigers with 18 points. Luke Zuiker added eight points.
Ashbeck did pass Rich Rust (1987-90) for sixth place on Marshfield’s all-time scoring list. He now has 884 points in his career and is just 17 away from passing former teammate Cale Zuiker (2008-11) for fifth on the scoring list.
Luke Heller scored 18 points for Everest, which saw nine different players score in the win.
Marshfield had just 12 rebounds in the game, six by Ben Satter, and didn’t score a basket in the fourth quarter. Trailing 48-37 after three quarters, the Tigers made just two free throws in the fourth and never threatened.
Marshfield returns to action Tuesday with a home game against Wausau East.
