MARSHFIELD – Marshfield senior Taylor Varsho scored 24 points to break the school’s career scoring record as the Tigers rolled Altoona 59-27 in a nonconference girls basketball game Thursday night at Marshfield High School.

Varsho came into the game 19 points shy of Carlin McClary’s school record of 1,240 points set from 1975-78. She drilled a 3-pointer near the end of the third quarter to surpass McClary and now stands with 1,246 career points.

Marshfield coach Heidi Michaelis said she thought Varsho might have a shot at the record during her sophomore season.

“She scored at such a crazy pace, she made 64 3-pointers that year, and I was amazed at how easy she was making it look,” Michaelis said. “I didn’t know if it was because she was a sophomore and people just hadn’t seen her yet, but she kept scoring. I thought she had a good chance at it when she was scoring like that night in and night out.”

Varsho overcame a horrific knee injury that she suffered prior to the sectional semifinals last season and fought back to return to the lineup after missing the first three games of the year.

“For Taylor to break that record and do it at home in front of the home crowd was pretty special,” Michaelis said.

Marshfield used a 15-1 run in the second quarter to open up a 32-9 halftime lead. The Tigers put the game away with a 15-4 third quarter.

Tiffany Stargardt, Darian Molter and Courtney Bauer each scored eight points, and Stargardt had a team-high 10 rebounds for the Tigers, who improve to 15-4.

Marshfield plays another nonconference game Tuesday at Rhinelander.
