PARK FALLS – The Marshfield boys hockey team’s season was definitely a year of ‘what if’ and ‘so close’ moments.
Thursday’s WIAA regional final was another one of those moments.
The Tigers lost their fourth game this season by one goal, falling 3-2 to Chequamegon/Phillips at the Park Falls Recreation Center.
The Screaming Eagles scored a pair of goals in the third period to overcome a 2-1 deficit and pull out the win.
Chequamegon/Phillips (19-4-2) moves on to a sectional semifinal next Tuesday against Eau Claire Memorial at the Hobbs Arena in Eau Claire.
Marshfield’s season ends with an 11-11-1 record.
Zach Leggon scored on an assist from Bo Howard with 2:50 left in the first period to tie the game for Marshfield at 1-1.
The Tigers went ahead when Zac Alboreo scored with 3:38 left in the second.
However, Jacob Lemke scored his second goal of the game at the 3:15 mark and Josh Lemke provided what turned out to be the game-winner with 5:22 to go.
Mac Alboreo had 27 saves for the Tigers.
Kristen Pechacek saved 17 shots for C/P.
Seniors Zac Alboreo, Austin Littmann and Alex Krasne played their final games for Marshfield in what proved to be the program’s first non-losing season since going 9-9-4 in 2004-05. The 11 wins this season were the second most ever by a Tigers’ squad, just one shy of the team record of 12 in 1998-99.
