UW-Marshfield/Wood County basketball teams advance in WCC playoffs

MARSHFIELD – The University of Wisconsin-Marshfield/Wood County women’s and men’s basketball teams both advanced in the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference playoffs with first-round wins at home Saturday afternoon.

Five Marauders scored in double figures to lead the women’s team to a 79-37 win over UW-Richland.

The men’s team followed with a 74-68 victory over UW-Barron County.

Paige Albrecht led the UW-Marshfield women with 27 points and 11 steals as the Marauders dominated from the start. Heather Adrian and Marissa Draxler each added 15 points, Tiffany Becker had 12 and Bailey Klieforth scored 10 for Marshfield. Becker had a team-high 12 rebounds and Klieforth and Draxler both dished out seven assists.

“The girls came out strong today,” Marauders coach Rhonda Keding said. “They did a great job on defense of ball pressure out on the wings and trapping.”

The Marauders will play at UW-Rock County on Wednesday in the next round of the WCC playoffs.

Brandon Herr led the UW-Marshfield men’s team with 22 points. Leo Braun added 16 points and Jake Scheppler chipped in 10 in the win.

UW-Marshfield will also play in the next round of the playoffs on Wednesday at UW-Richland.
