MOSINEE – For the third straight time, the Marshfield girls hockey team’s season ended with a playoff loss to the Central Wisconsin Storm.
The Tigers stayed close for two periods until the Storm pushed a pair of shots past Marshfield goalie Alexis Straughan in the third for a 4-1 win in a WIAA sectional semifinal Tuesday night at the Mosinee Recreation Center.
The Storm, who knocked out Marshfield in a sectional semifinal in 2010 and in a sectional final last season, moves on to a sectional final against Northland Pines on Friday night at Tomahawk. The winner moves on to the WIAA State Girls Hockey Tournament in Madison on March 2-3. The Storm is attempting to qualify for their fifth straight state tournament.
Marshfield’s Paige Johnson scored at the 12:27 mark of the first period to tie the game 1-1.
Sara Poirier scored for the Storm with 1:45 left in the second period to give them back the lead to start an impressive scoring run that put the game away.
Kylie Gazzolo and Ashley Zacho scored in the opening 5:04 of the third period to push Central Wisconsin’s lead to 4-1 and Marshfield couldn’t recover.
Straughan finished with 37 saves for Marshfield, which has its season end with a 13-7-1 record.
