Colby ends Spencer boys basketball team’s season with WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal win

COLBY – A big first half lifted Colby past Spencer 61-45 in a WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal boys basketball game Friday night at Colby High School.

Colby jumped out to an 18-10 lead after the first quarter and a 35-16 advantage by halftime as it cruised to the win.

Aaron Koerner scored 12 points and Michael Knetter and Hunter Busse each had 11 for the Hornets (17-6).

Steven Gilboy was the only Spencer player to score in double figures, totaling 15 points. Joe Meyers and Jordan Buss each added eight.

Spencer (13-11) shot just 33 percent (18 of 54) from the field and made only 5 of 23 3-pointers as it tried to force a comeback. The Rockets were also bitten by 17 turnovers.

Colby held a 29-22 rebounding advantage and a 14-4 margin from the free-throw line.

Colby moves on to a Division 4 regional final matchup at Colfax (21-2) on Saturday night.
