Stratford boys basketball moves on with WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal win over Marathon

STRATFORD – Nolan Bargender led three Stratford players in double figures with 14 points as the Tigers defeated Marathon 48-34 in a WIAA Division 4 boys basketball regional semifinal Friday night at Stratford High School.

Troy Mengel added 13 points and Derek Austin had 12 for Stratford, which improves to 19-4. The second-seeded Tigers host No. 6 Stevens Point Pacelli on Saturday. Pacelli (17-7) upended No. 3 seed Three Lakes on the road Friday night, 57-40.

Stratford beat Pacelli 66-62 way back on Nov. 28, the season-opener for both teams.

Stratford led 14-9 after the first quarter and 26-17 at halftime. After the Raiders closed to within seven going into the fourth, the Tigers used a 15-8 advantage to finish off the victory.

Greg Belter didn’t score by had six assists and six rebounds for the Tigers.

Marathon’s season ends with a 16-8 record, including three losses to Stratford.
