AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale girls basketball team knocked off third-ranked Wisconsin Rapids Assumption last Friday and had its sights set on doing the same to second-ranked Wausau Newman Catholic on Thursday.
In the end, however, the Cardinals were too strong and swarmed the Apaches with a 44-33 victory at Auburndale High School.
Auburndale scored only 10 points in the second half after trailing by five at halftime and saw its six-game winning streak snapped.
Liz Breu led Auburndale with 12 points and eight rebounds. She scored eight points in the first half, and Kelly Tomfohrde had six of her eight points in the opening two quarters, as the Apaches (13-6, 8-4 Marawood South) hung close but didn’t have enough firepower to pull off their second upset in the last week.
Megan Connolly was 7 of 9 from the field and scored a game-high 16 points for Newman (17-2, 11-1 Marawood South), which has won 10 straight games since a loss at Marshfield in December.
Auburndale closes out its South Division schedule with games at Pittsville on Tuesday and at home against Marathon next Thursday.
Newman, ranked No. 2 in Division 4 in the wissports.net Coaches Poll, can clinch the conference title with wins against Stratford and Edgar next week.
