EAU CLAIRE – The Spencer girls basketball team gave No. 1 seed Eau Claire Regis all it could handle but came up just short, losing a WIAA Division 4 regional final to the Ramblers 43-39 on Saturday night at Eau Claire Regis High School.

Spencer led 18-17 at halftime but Regis (22-2) rallied with a 9-4 third quarter to go up 26-22 heading into the fourth.

Each team scored 17 points in a high-scoring fourth quarter as the Rockets couldn’t close the gap. Spencer finishes its season with an 18-7 record.

“We played our best game of the year,” Spencer coach Dan Brodziski said. “Unfortunately it came down to one or two plays later in the game that could of went either way.

“I’m very proud of the way our girls played. I told them that they should hold their heads high. They have nothing to be ashamed of. They left it all on the court.”

Krystal Weier had 11 points, five rebounds and four assists, and Tara Matter added 10 points for Spencer.

Heather Bowe topped Regis with 21 points and six rebounds.

Regis will play in a Division 4 sectional semifinal against Colfax (21-3) at Chippewa Falls on Thursday. Ladysmith (23-1) at Hurley (24-0) play in the other sectional semifinal at Spooner with the winners meeting in the sectional final next Saturday at Osseo-Fairchild.
