Marshfield Columbus Catholic’s postseason surge ends with WIAA Division 5 sectional semifinal loss to Owen-Withee

ABBOTSFORD – Owen-Withee used an 18-2 second-quarter advantage to take control and blow past Marshfield Columbus Catholic 66-31 in a WIAA Division 5 girls basketball sectional semifinal Thursday night at Abbotsford High School.

The loss ends a miraculous run by Columbus Catholic, which was just 6-15 during the regular season before winning three straight road games to reach the sectional finals. The Dons end the season with a 9-16 record.

Owen-Withee (22-4) will play Northwood (19-5) in a Division 5 sectional final Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Spooner High School. The winner earns a berth in the WIAA State Girls Basketball Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison next week.

Columbus trailed 18-11 after one quarter before the Blackhawks grabbed all the momentum.

Bailey Karuba scored nine of her game-high 18 points in the second quarter for Owen-Withee as it pulled ahead 36-13 at halftime.

Liz Manlick led Columbus with 14 points, including eight in the third quarter when she hit a pair of 3-pointers. However, Owen-Withee still outscored the Dons 15-8 in the period and led 51-21 heading into the fourth.
