WAUSAU – Sophomore guard Taylor Varsho scored 31 points to lead the Marshfield girls basketball team to a resounding 61-29 victory over Wausau East on Friday night at East High School.
The Tigers (17-2, 11-0) clinched the Wisconsin Valley Conference title outright, laying claim to their sixth conference championship in the last eight years and their third straight. It is Marshfield’s fifth outright Valley crown.
Varsho scored her points in a variety of ways, hitting six 3-pointers and driving to the basket when East pressured her on defense.
“Taylor stepped out and hit six 3s, but also when East came out at her, she drove and hit some tough baskets inside and made some other three-point plays,” Marshfield coach Heidi Michaelis said. “She was strong inside and outside tonight.”
Senior Andie Varsho was the catalyst again for the Tigers. Although scoring only one point, the point guard had six assists and eight steals to set the tone for Marshfield.
The Tigers had struggled early in recent games, falling behind in the first quarter of their last three Valley games. On Friday, however, Marshfield came out on fire.
The Tigers outscored East (2-18, 1-9 WVC) 17-2 in the first period and held a commanding lead throughout.
“We were pretty focused on coming out and playing four solid quarters and they were ready to go tonight,” Michaelis said. “They came out and did what they were supposed to.”
Eleni Seitz came off the bench to score 12 points for Marshfield.
The Tigers host Altoona in a nonconference game Tuesday in their final regular-season home game, then wrap up the season with games at Wisconsin Rapids on March 4 and Lakeland on March 5.
