SPENCER – Spencer committed eight errors and struck out 13 times against Gilman pitcher Tiara Katz, then had a seventh-inning rally come up just short and dropped an 11-9 decision to the Pirates in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division softball game Thursday.
Gilman scored seven times in the top of the first inning and led 11-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh before the Rockets rallied for four runs but couldn’t quite pull off the comeback attempt.
“Gilman is one of the best teams in the conference, but we did not play well defensively at all,” Spencer coach Jason Gorst said. “We can take some positives out of the game with our offense, but we struck too often. Gilman is too good to commit eight errors against and strike out 13 times.”
Paige Johnson had a single, two doubles and three RBIs to lead Spencer offensively. Marisa Johnson added two hits and scored twice and Krystal Weier hit a home run, knocked in a pair of runs and scored three times for the Rockets.
Shelby Skabroud was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Anna Sedivy had three RBIs for Gilman.
Spencer plays a nonconference game at Stratford on Monday.
