MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield girls soccer team won its Wisconsin Valley Conference opener Tuesday, rolling past Wausau West 4-1 at Griese Park.
Alison Gruen scored 8:30 into the game and the Tigers added three more goals in a 6½ minute span of the second half to lift Marshfield to the win.
Marshfield outshot West 15-4, with Tigers goalie Jala Zahn finishing with three saves.
“Going against the wind to get a goal at the 8-minute mark was huge as it was difficult for both teams to cross midfield against the wind,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “Alison made a great sliding shot that escaped the West goalie.”
With the win at their back, the Tigers got rolling in the second half. Walker Guzowski scored on an assist from Darian Molter 2:59 into the half and Molter added a pair of goals within 1:30 of each other to put Marshfield in control.
“We stressed coming out strong after the halftime and the girls really dominated that period,” Lindner said.
Marni Sharazen scored at the 54:23 mark for West’s lone goal.
Marshfield (2-0 overall) hosts Wausau East on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Griese Park.
