MARSHFIELD – For the second straight game, the Marshfield baseball team needed to rally late to pull off a win.
Cole Irish was hit by a pitch to force in a run and Austin Littmann followed with a two-run single to lift the Tigers to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Wausau East in a Wisconsin Valley Conference game Tuesday at Jack Hackman Field.
Wausau East scored single runs in the fourth and seventh to take a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh and Marshfield took advantage of some shaky pitching and defense from the Lumberjacks to pull out the win.
Bo Howard and Nick Treankler had walks to start the inning. Jaren Hiller followed with a drive to center field that was dropped, loading the bases. After East got two Marshfield hitters out, Irish was beaned to force in the first run before Littmann delivered the game-winner.
Marshfield improves to 6-2 and 3-0 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference as it won its sixth straight game. East falls to 3-3 and 0-2 in the conference.
Elliot Ashbeck improved to 3-0 on the season, tossing a complete-game five-hitter. He struck out six and didn’t walk a batter.
The Tigers are off until Saturday when they play a nonconference doubleheader at Chippewa Falls.
