MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield girls soccer team responded well after suffering its first loss of the season as it knocked off Merrill 5-0 in a dominating performance Tuesday at Griese Park.
The Tigers outshot Merrill 27-1 and had 14 corner kicks to none for the Bluejays.
Marshfield improves to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, while Merrill is now 1-4-1 and 0-2 in the Valley.
Darian Molter netted a hat trick for Marshfield and assisted on another goal.
Emily Goeppinger scored off the Molter assist at the 17:28 mark and the score remained 1-0 going into halftime.
In the second half, Marshfield started to take advantage of its offensive chances. Molter scored 4:57 in off an assist from Emily Wolfe, Mardie Shanahan scored at the 61:03 mark and Molter added two goals – on assists from Abby Brock and Goeppinger – to provide the 5-0 final score.
“The first half we had our shots go a little wild, but in the second half we settled down and played well,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “We have been pushing the girls to play at a higher level to gear up for the tougher part of our schedule that is upcoming. Hopefully the second half is the start of good things.”
