WESTON – D.C. Everest scored a pair of goals in the first half and held on to a 2-1 win over Marshfield in girls soccer action on a snowy night at D.C. Everest Middle School.
The game started in rain, which later turned to snow making for tough field conditions and a muddled game.
Maddie Mittelsteadt and McKenzie Grallo scored goals in the first half to put Everest up 2-0.
Darian Molter scored off an assist from Abby Brock 2:05 into the second half, but the snowy field conditions impacted the game from there on and neither team would score again.
Marshfield falls to 3-2 and 2-2 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, while Everest improves to 5-2-1 and 3-0 in the Valley.
“Both teams traded opportunities the rest of the way and the heavy wet snow made transitions almost impossible,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “At times it looked like a snowball as the ball accumulated snow as it traveled to the next player.”
Marshfield goalkeeper Jala Zahn had 17 saves to keep it close.
“Jala Zahn had a super game in net as she played her best game by far in poor conditions,” Lindner said. “To be a goalie on a night like this is tough, but she rose to the challenge and we cannot say enough of her game.”
Marshfield plays at the Sheboygan South Invitational on Saturday and returns to Wisconsin Valley Conference action next Thursday when it hosts Stevens Point.
