MARSHFIELD – The Spencer softball team went 2-1 Saturday at the Marshfield Invitational.

The Rockets lost to La Crosse Logan 16-7 and defeated Marshfield 11-1 and Tomahawk 11-5 to improve to 8-2 this season.

Marshfield also lost to Tomahawk, 14-2, and beat Logan 6-5 with a two-run seventh inning. Logan edged Tomahawk 8-7 in the other game to tie Spencer for first at the tournament with a 2-1 record.

Against Logan, Spencer led 6-0 before Logan erupted for 13 unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Spencer committed eight errors in the loss.

Marisa Johnson and Tynae Phillips each had two hits.

Spencer scored seven runs in the first inning of its win over Marshfield. Krystal Weier had a single and triple and Sam Nikolay scored twice and knocked in two runs for the Rockets.

The Rockets used a nine-run second inning to blow past Tomahawk.

Spencer smashed 12 hits in the win from nine different players. Phillips, Weier and Dani Johnson each had two hits, and Phillips drove in three runs and Brooke Kettleborough, Nikolay and Weier each had two RBIs.

“Today was a great experience for us,” Spencer coach Jason Gorst said. “We got to play some much larger schools and we did pretty well. Our pitchers were great and we showed we could hit good pitching as well. We have to continue to improve defensively, but our girls didn’t hang their heads and kept playing hard. I am very proud of them.”

Spencer plays at Gilman on Tuesday.

Marshfield was dominated by Tomahawk 14-2 but bounced back with a 6-5 win over La Crosse Logan.

In the win over the Rangers, Marshfield rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Autumn Slowiak singled to leadoff the inning, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Miranda Baierl, and scored on a double by Taylor Hasz. Sara Sturomski followed with an RBI single to give the Tigers the victory.

Marshfield (2-5) hosts Wausau West on Tuesday.
