MARSHFIELD – Mardie Shanahan had a goal and two assists, and Alison Gruen added a goal and an assist to lead the Marshfield girls soccer team to a dominating 3-0 nonconference win over Chippewa Falls on Friday at Griese Park.

Gruen scored at the 23:28 mark and Darian Molter added a goal 44 seconds later – both on assists from Shanahan – to give the Tigers the early lead.

Just 8 minutes later, Shanahan found the back of the net on an assist from Gruen.

“It was a difficult game in the fact we really were spent from the previous night’s game with Stevens Point,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “Some players were still recuperating from an intense game Thursday, but some other players really stepped it up.”

Marshfield’s defense did the rest, holding Chippewa Falls (4-8-1) to just two shots on goal – both saved by goalkeeper Jala Zahn.

“The defense had another great game and it was not just in getting another shutout, but with some of the touches they had and turns that really impressed the coaching staff,” Lindner said. “Mary Wolff, Megan Marotz, Danielle Sopiarz, Leah Cherney, Emily Haws and Courtney Thumann played well and the rotation made it easy for the coaching staff as they all played some nice balls to start many transitions up field.”

Marshfield (6-3-1) hosts Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday on Parent’s Night. The game starts at 5 p.m. at Griese Park.
