Marshfield baseball edges Stevens Point, ties Panthers for first place in Wisconsin Valley Conference

STEVENS POINT – Luke Wirtz ripped a bases-clearing double to highlight a four-run fourth inning and Elliot Ashbeck struck out nine in a complete-game effort to lead the Marshfield baseball team to a 5-3 win over Stevens Point Area Senior High on Tuesday at Bukolt Park.

With the win, the Tigers move into a tie with SPASH for first place in the Wisconsin Valley Conference at 5-1.

Marshfield trailed 1-0 before getting to Stevens Point starter Logan Mallek. Jaren Hiller had a bases loaded single to tie the game and Wirtz followed with the three-run double to give the Tigers (10-5 overall) a 4-1 lead.

Hiller had a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to push the lead to 5-1. SPASH scored runs in the fifth and sixth but couldn’t get any closer than two.

Ashbeck gave up seven hits and three walks to improve to 3-1 in Valley play. He also had a triple and single to account for two of Marshfield’s six hits.

Marshfield plays at Merrill on Thursday.
