WAUSAU – The Marshfield girls soccer team wasted little time getting its offense rolling, and it never let up, crushing Wausau East 9-0 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference matchup on Tuesday.

Alison Gruen scored 30 seconds into the game to spark the Tigers, who scored four goals total in the first 9:19 and led 7-0 by halftime.

The win avenges an early-season 1-0 loss to East and improves Marshfield’s record to 8-4-1 overall and 4-4 in the Valley. East drops to 2-8-3 and 2-5-1 in the conference.

After Gruen’s goal got things started, Walker Guzowski added a goal at 1:28, Mardie Shanahan scored at the 4:15 mark and Emily Wolfe scored at 9:19. Darian Molter assisted on Guzowski’s and Wolfe’s goals.

Abby Brock, Molter and Wolfe added goals later in the half, and Gruen and Molter scored in the second half to provide the final margin.

Jala Zahn stopped all eight East shots on goal for the Tigers.

“We have been working on finishing and some defensive drills to combat the opponent’s attacks and things all came together tonight,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “The offense has really clicked the last three halves as we have scorched the nets for 13 goals. Tonight to have six players with a multiple point game was incredible.”

Marshfield returns to the road Thursday with a game at Merrill and will participate in a tournament at Waupaca on Saturday.
