MARSHFIELD – Caitlin Kozik and Katie Treankler delivered back-to-back two-out RBI doubles to lead the Marshfield softball team to a thrilling 6-5 win over Wausau East in a Wisconsin Valley Conference contest Tuesday at the Marshfield Fairgrounds.
Marshfield went up 4-1 after three innings and clung to a 4-3 lead before the Lumberjacks scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to take a 5-4 advantage.
Taylor Hasz had a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh and after another out, Kozik smashed an RBI double to tie the game. Treankler followed with another run-scoring double to give the Tigers the win to end their six-game losing streak.
“We led the majority of the game and East kept pecking away and took the lead in the seventh inning, so for us to come back and win in that kind of fashion was exciting,” Marshfield coach Mike Voss said. “To finally win a game like that – the close ones we have had have gone the other way – is great. We came up with the big defensive plays and the big hits when we needed them and Caitlin pitched pretty well. It’s nice when everything comes together.”
Kozik earned the win for the Tigers, walking two and scattering eight hits.
Sara Sturomski went 3-for-4, and Hasz, Kozik and Melissa Yang each had two singles for Marshfield.
The Tigers play a nonconference game at Antigo on Thursday.
