WAUPACA – The Marshfield girls soccer team won the Waupaca Tournament on Saturday, finishing with a 2-0-1 record and knocking off Waupaca 1-0 in the championship game.
The Tigers defeated Northland Pines 6-3 in the opener and tied Sauk Prairie 0-0 in the second game. The shootout was 3-3 and in a sudden death shootout, Sauk Prairie missed before Walker Guzowski netted the winner to send Marshfield to the championship game.
Marshfield goalkeeper Jala Zahn was named tournament Most Valuable Player with seven saves and two shutouts. She tied Jenna Beach for the school record for shutouts in a season with seven. Marshfield (11-4-1) has eight overall this year.
“We have done some fantastic things this year and the records are starting to pile up for this team,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “The awesome thing is the entire team can take pride in helping set these standards as no one player could do it alone – we have 19 players responsible for all and any accolades that come our way.”
In the first game against Northland Pines, the Tigers built a 4-0 in the opening 9 minutes.
Darian Molter scored 20 seconds into the game on an assist from Leah Cherney, then added another on an assist from Guzowski at the 3-minute mark.
Just 20 seconds later, Alison Gruen scored and Molter netted a hat trick with another goal, on an assist from Emily Wolfe, at the 9-minute mark.
After Pines cut the Tigers’ lead in half, Gruen scored again on an assist from Molter. Pines added another goal and Wolfe finished off the scoring with an unassisted score at the 35:30 mark.
After tying Sauk Prairie, the game went to a shootout to determine which team would advance to the championship match.
Molter, Wolfe and Gruen scored for Marshfield in the shootout, but Sauk Prairie made three as well to send the game to a sudden victory situation, where Guzowski won it for the Tigers.
Molter scored on a breakaway at the 39:35 mark of the championship game against Waupaca, and Zahn and the Tigers’ defense held the rest of the way as Marshfield won 1-0.
Marshfield plays its final regular-season home game at 5 p.m. Tuesday against D.C. Everest at Griese Park.
