MARSHFIELD – Marshfield scored five runs in the fourth inning to pull ahead, then survived a half-hour lightning delay to defeat Wausau West 6-0 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference and regular-season baseball finale Thursday at Jack Hackman Field.
Bo Howard tripled and scored on a groundout by Jeron Hiller to give Marshfield a 1-0 lead in the second.
The Tigers blew the game open in the fourth. Daulton Varsho led off with a single, Elliot Ashbeck followed with a walk and Howard cracked an RBI single to make it 2-0.
Nick Treankler added an RBI single and Hiller smacked a two-run double as Marshfield opened up a 6-0 lead.
With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, one out short of the needed 4½ innings to make it a complete game, the contest was stopped because of lightning in the area. After a mandatory 30-minute delay, Howard came back on the mound and threw one pitch to get the final out. Before Marshfield could come to the plate, rain began and the game was called.
Marshfield ends the regular season with a 14-12 record and a 9-3 mark in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. The win ends a five-game losing streak by the Tigers.
“I was really happy with the way we were able to hit the ball tonight, especially in that fourth inning,” Marshfield coach Mark Zee said. “Hopefully it will get some momentum going from this.”
Howard improved to 7-1 on the season and 5-0 in the Valley with the one-hit shutout. He struck out six and walked two.
Marshfield hosts the winner of Eau Claire Memorial and Menomonie in a WIAA Division 1 regional final on May 31 at Jack Hackman Field. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
