PITTSVILLE – The Auburndale boys and Stratford girls finished second at the Pittsville Cross Country Invitational on Thursday.
Marathon took three of the top four spots and scored 20 points to win the boys team title. Auburndale, which got a third-place finish from Luke Haas (17:08.7) and a fifth-place finish from Jacob Hunsberger (18:36.1) ended up with 72 points to take second as a team.
Marshfield Columbus Catholic was fourth, Stratford fifth and Spencer sixth as all of the area teams kicked off their 2012 season.
Jeremy Binder led the Columbus boys, taking 15th in 19:34.9.
Spencer was led by Rudy Nieman, who took ninth (19:02.9) and Stratford got a 10th-place finish from Mark Wenzel (19:03.5).
Assumption’s Haley Joosten won the girls meet (16:17.9), with Cara Viviano taking third (16:34.5) as the Royals finished with 56 points, edging Stratford by just four points.
Dani Bender was fifth (17:25.9) and Nadia King (17:26.3) was sixth for the Tigers.
Auburndale took fourth behind a second-place finish from Abby Bauer (16:30.2).
Columbus Catholic and Spencer ran with less than five runners and did not accumulate a team score.
Rachel Roehl was the Dons’ top runner, taking 15th in 18:19.8.
Paige Lawrence topped Spencer by taking 18th in 19:06.1.
“The team ran well, especially, Abby Bauer and Emma Steines for the girls, and Like Haas, Jacob Hunsberger, and Lane Schuld for the boys, but the rest of the team needs to work hard to make the team stronger,” Auburndale coach Jim Johnson said.
