MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield volleyball team survived a tight, long first game with Rhinelander and from there on it cruised to a 5-0 record and a first-place finish at the Marshfield Invitational on Saturday at Marshfield High School.

The Tigers defeated Rhinelander 33-31, 25-18; Superior 25-13, 25-17; Wauwatosa West 25-13, 25-14; Medford 25-11, 25-17; and Altoona 25-15, 25-14 to take the tournament championship.

Tiffany Stargardt again led a balanced offensive attack for Marshfield with 41 kills. Mikala Sebastian added 36, Chelsea Akin had 26 and Courtney Bauer had 25 kills and 55 assists for the Tigers.

Tori Nanstad led the Tigers with 65 assists, Darian Molter had a team-high 55 digs, Stargardt added 32 digs, and Sebastian and Miranda Forrest each added five block kills.

“We did a lot of really good things today,” Marshfield coach Dawn Sadowska said. “First, we came out ready to play and beat a very competitive Rhinelander team. Second, as the stats prove, we had a number of girls step up and attack well today. Finally, we maintained focus throughout the day and never went three games with anyone.”

Marshfield (17-3) returns to action Thursday with a conference match at home against Wisconsin Rapids.
