MARSHFIELD – Marshfield High School announced that Bill Zuiker will take over for Craig Michaelis as the new varsity boys basketball coach beginning this season.
The school’s athletic department officially announced the move on Monday.
Michaelis resigned after accepting the assistant principal job at Grant Elementary School in Marshfield two weeks ago.
Michaelis led the Tigers to a 108-113 record during his 10-year tenure as varsity head coach, which began in 2002-03 when he took over for Gordie Sisson. His 108 wins are the second most in the program’s history, behind Sisson’s 138.
Michaelis led the Tigers to a 50-21 mark over the last three seasons, including a tie for the 2009-10 Wisconsin Valley Conference championship, the second in school history and first since 1992.
Zuiker was a three-time first-team all-conference player and Academic All-American at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, playing under legendary coach Dick Bennett from 1977-81. Zuiker, a graduate of Lakeland High School, was inducted into the UWSP Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989.
Zuiker served as a graduate assistant coach at the Wisconsin in 1984-85 and was an assistant coach at Illlinois State for two seasons before accepting a position as an English teacher at Marshfield High School. He also served as head coach of the UW-Marshfield/Wood County men’s basketball team from 1989-1995 and he returned to coaching in 2005 as an assistant under Michaelis.
