MADISON – Stratford’s Indy Spindler has wrestled Pittsville’s Kyle Krohn in the past, so he knew what to do when he met up with his Marawood Conference rival in the preliminary round of the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament on Thursday at the Kohl Center.
Spindler flipped Krohn on his back and pinned him at the 1:00 mark of the first period to improve to 41-4 this season and capture a spot in the Division 3 285-pound quarterfinals on Friday after morning.
“I had that confidence where I pinned him before, why can’t I just do it again?,” Spindler said.
Spindler will face Rance Nofsinger (42-1) of Brookwood in a quarterfinal at approximately 12:30 p.m. Friday.
Spindler wanted to make sure he wrestled his type of match, rather than leave the door open for an upset by Krohn (32-10).
“I just wanted to go out there and wrestle the way I like to,” Spindler said. “I wanted to attack where I attack and take him down. I went for a headlock twice and bear-hugged him to his back. That’s my kind of style. That’s what I like to do.”
As a senior in his first trip to the state tournament, Spindler is in that now-or-never mode. A first-round loss would have meant the end of his career.
“Even though I beat him before, I knew it could go either way,” Spindler said. “Coach told me, ‘It’s the state tournament, anything can happen. He beats you that’s a great cap to his season.’ I was like, ‘Well, I’m going to go out and stick him, that’s what I do.’ It’s more fun when you win.”
