MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys soccer team used an offensive barrage to sweep it competition at the Marshfield Triangular on Saturday, beating Tomah 5-2 and Lakeland 3-2 at Griese Park.
The Tigers (5-8-1) came from behind with four second-half goals to top Tomah in the opener, then pulled out to a 3-0 lead before holding off Lakeland.
Logan Arndt and Matt McCann each scored two goals in the win over Tomah, and McCann added two more goals in the victory over Lakeland.
Tomah led 2-1 at halftime, with Arndt providing the lone Tigers’ tally.
McCann tied the game 9 minutes into the second half, and Camilo Mesa, Arndt and McCann all scored in a span of 3:40 to lift Marshfield to the win.
Marshfield’s Chris Pahl opened the scoring in the game vs. Lakeland with a goal at 10:23, and McCann added another just 1:04 later to put the Tigers up 2-0.
McCann scored again at the 48:17 mark before Lakeland’s Nate Kingstad scored twice in a 2-minute span and the Tigers held on for the final 17 minutes to grab their second win of the day.
“It was nice to see Matt McCann step up and start scoring,” Marshfield coach Ron Todryk said. “He is one of two players that we count on for our offense – Austin Gilbert is the other – these two guys are solid.
“We gave up 24 shots to Wisconsin Rapids the other night so we changed up our midfield formation to make our defense stronger, and it beefed up our offense at the same time. We started to realize our passing game in the Tomah game. We put up 47 shots in the two games, which was nice to see.”
Freshman Mathias Holm stepped in as Marshfield’s other two goalies are suffering from injuries and had 18 saves in the two wins.
Marshfield hosts Wausau West on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Griese Park.
