ALTOONA – Charlie Mayeux rushed for an even 200 yards and scored five touchdowns to lead the Spencer/Columbus Catholic football team to a 40-7 rout of Altoona on Friday night at Altoona High School.
The Rockets improve to 3-2 overall and in the Cloverbelt Conference with the victory, and stand just one conference win away from their second-straight WIAA playoff berth. Spencer/Columbus hosts Pittsville in a nonconference game next Friday, then finishes its season with Cloverbelt games at home against Osseo-Fairchild on Oct. 5 and at Fall Creek on Oct. 12.
Altoona drops to 1-4 and 1-3 in the Cloverbelt with the loss.
Spencer/Columbus racked up 553 yards rushing on 55 carries as it ground the Railroaders into the ground.
Joe Meyers added 161 yards on just eight carries, and scored on a 50-yard touchdown for the Rockets.
Altoona managed just 152 yards of offense and eight first downs, compared to 27 first downs for Spencer/Columbus.
Mayeux and Meyers had touchdown runs in the first quarter, and Mayeux added three more scores from 15, 70 and 7 yards out in the second quarter to give Spencer/Columbus a commanding 34-7 lead at halftime.
Mayeux added a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
