MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys soccer team stopped a five-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Merrill on Tuesday at Griese Park.
Quinn VanOudenhoven scored an unassisted goal at the 27:28 mark and the lead held the rest of the way for the Tigers.
Marshfield dominated the game on the defensive end, giving up just four shots on goal. All four shots were saved by Tigers’ goalkeeper Neil Dums.
Marshfield improves to 6-13-1 and 3-6-1 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. Merrill drops to 0-7-2 in the WVC.
“My sweepers, Bobby Leggon and Brandon Fahey, did a great job of containing their forward Kriss Phillip who was off to races chasing down the long ball that Merrill used a lot,” Marshfield coach Ron Todryk said. ““Today we were able to control the ball very well. We mixed up our attack with possesion and then we tried several quick counter attacks. We took 16 shots with nine of them on goal, which is good, but we need to place the ball better on our shots. We just hit to many to their keeper.”
Marshfield plays at D.C. Everest on Thursday and closes its season with a home game against Stevens Point on Oct. 4.
