Marshfield’s Nadeen Lieberman wins, Columbus Catholic’s Elizabeth Manlick loses first-round match at WIAA State Girls Tennis Tournament

MADISON – Marshfield freshman Nadeen Lieberman won her opening match at the WIAA State Individual Girls Tennis Tournament on Thursday, beating Asia Butler of Whitefish Bay 6-3, 6-1, in a Division 1 No. 1 singles first-round match at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the University of Wisconsin campus.

Lieberman (21-10) will play Glendale Nicolet’s Emily Mone in a second-round match at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Mone defeated Kelsie Hines of Hudson 6-0, 6-0, in the opening round.

With a win, Lieberman would play in a third-round match Friday afternoon. The state quarterfinals are set for Friday night, with semifinals and the championship match scheduled for Saturday.

Marshfield Columbus Catholic senior Elizabeth Manlick lost her Division 2 No. 1 singles first-round match, falling to Jenna Zimmerman of Racine St. Catherine’s 6-1, 6-1.

Manlick, who made it to the state tournament for the fourth straight year, finishes her season season with an 18-4 record. She ends her state tournament career with a 1-4 record – her only win came as a freshman when she won her first-round match.

Manlick also lost to Zimmerman in the first round of the tournament in 2010.

Zimmerman (25-5) moves on to a second-round match vs. Lianna Hawi of Oshkosh Lourdes (19-2) on Friday morning.
