SPENCER – The Spencer volleyball team took its first step toward a return trip to the state tournament with a 3-1 win over Stratford in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal Tuesday night at Spencer High School.

The Rockets won 25-11, 19-25, 25-7, 25-11, to eliminate Stratford.

Tara Matter had a team-high 12 kills, Alicia Endreas had 19 digs and two aces, and Brooke Kettleborough had 39 assists for Spencer.

“We started really strong, then in Game 2 we mentally lost it,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “We forgot we needed to win three games to win the match. We struggled through 12 unforced errors in Game 2. When we played our game we controlled every aspect of the match, which was evident by the scores of games 1, 3 and 4.”

Tynae Phillips added 11 kills and four blocks, Marisa Johnson had seven kills and Paige Johnson chipped in three blocks and 11 digs for the Rockets.

Stratford statistics were not provided.

Spencer, the No. 4 seed in its sectional, will host No. 5 Stanley-Boyd in a regional semifinal on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Spencer High School. The winner advances to the regional final on Saturday night against the winner of No. 1 Athens and No. 9 Rosholt, with the highest seeded team hosting the match.
