PESHTIGO – The Spencer/Columbus Catholic football team won its first playoff game since 2006, going on the road to upset Peshtigo 13-6 on Friday night in a WIAA Division 5 Level 1 matchup at Peshtigo High School.
The sixth-seeded Rockets (7-2) won their fifth straight game to move on to a Level 2 game next weekend against former Marawood Conference rival Stratford (7-2). The game will be Friday at Spencer starting at 7 p.m.
Spencer/Columbus stuck to its running game, rushing the ball on 54 of its 55 offense plays and racking up 204 yards.
Charlie Mayeux had 141 yards rushing on 28 carries and scored on 1-yard touchdown runs in the first and third quarters to give the Rockets a 13-0 lead.
Peshtigo cut it to a one-score deficit in the fourth quarter on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Dakota Keller to Levi Sanborn, but the Rockets’ defense held from there.
Calvin Lenz, Eathen Aden and Joe Meyers had interceptions for Spencer/Columbus.
