MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Tiger Hoops Club eighth grade boys basketball team completed its season with a sixth-place finish at the Division 1 Wisconsin State Invitational Championship Tournament last weekend in Marshfield.
In round-robin action, Marshfield defeated West Allis Central 60-48, Brookfield Central 43-42 and Kimberly 41-40 to advance to the Round of 16.
Hunter Schultz scored 28 points and was 8 of 10 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter of the win over West Allis Central. Alec Hinson added 14 points, including three 3-pointers. Overall, Marshfield made nine 3-pointers.
Grant Michaelis hit the go-ahead free throw with 32 seconds left to lift Marshfield past Brookfield Central. Derek Michalski had 14 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, and Schultz added 12.
In another close win over Kimberly, Jared Klein made a layup with 45 seconds to go to push Marshfield ahead. Hinson drained another three 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 17 points. Schultz chipped in 10.
In the Round of 16, Marshfield edged Hartland Arrowhead 42-40 in overtime.
Marshfield trailed 26-19 at halftime before rallying to force overtime on a basket by Klein with 25 seconds left in regulation. Hinson scored go-ahead basket with 30 seconds left in OT. Hinson had 14 points and Schultz 11 in the win.
Marshfield then dropped a 51-44 decision to Middleton in the quarterfinals, and lost the fifth-place game to Madison Memorial 62-53.
Klein scored 13 points, Hinson 12 and Michaelis 11 in the loss to Middleton.
Against Memorial, Hinson had four 3-pointers and scored 16 points, and Michalski had three 3-pointers and 15 points for Marshfield.
Middleton went on to take third place, beating Kettle Moraine 49-33. Janesville Craig won the tournament championship with a 48-47 victory over Madison East.
