AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale girls basketball team showed from the start of Tuesday’s WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal that it is the top seed in its regional.
The Apaches outscored Stevens Point Pacelli 16-3 in the first quarter and rolled to a 50-23 victory over the Cardinals to improve to 17-6 overall and 13-2 in their last 15 games.
Auburndale hosts Marawood Conference South Division rival Marathon (13-10) in a regional semifinal Thursday at 7 p.m. The winner plays in a regional final at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wausau West.
Liz Breu and Kayla Nikolay each scored nine points in a balanced attack for the Apaches. Seven girls scored between six and nine points to account for all of Auburndale’s 50 points.
Cassie Panzer didn’t score, but led the Apaches with seven rebounds.
After the dominating start, Auburndale didn’t let up, leading 23-10 at halftime and 35-18 going into the fourth quarter.
