MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield softball team scored four runs in the fifth inning to bust open a tie game and went on to a 5-2 win over Wausau West on Monday at the Marshfield Fairgrounds to earn its first victory of the season.

With the score tied 1-1 after 4½ innings, Marshfield took advantage of three West errors to plate four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Brianna Breu led off with a single and went to third on an error. Miranda Baierl laid down another bunt and two West errors allowed three runs to score, including Baierl. Jordan Green followed with a double and later scored on a fielder’s choice to give the Tigers (1-8, 1-3 Wisconsin Valley Conference) a 5-1 lead.

West mounted a threat in the seventh. A walk, single and an error loaded the bases with one out against Baierl. Caitlin Kozik came in to pitch and got a fielder’s choice play and a pop out to end the game with only one run allowed.

“Caitlin did a good job coming in and getting those final two outs,” Marshfield coach Mike Voss said. “Miranda did a good job too, only giving up four hits. Our defense played really well with only one error.”

The Tigers play a nonconference game at Rhinelander on Tuesday.
