WAUPACA – The Marshfield girls soccer team went 2-1 and finished third at the Waupaca Tournament on Saturday.
The Tigers defeated North Fond du Lac 3-0 before losing to Waupaca 1-0 on a late goal in the final 2 minutes.
Marshfield rebounded with a 3-0 win over Northland Pines in the third-place match.
Darian Molter scored twice and Maddie Smith added a goal in the Tigers’ win over North Fond du Lac.
Marshfield allowed just three shots on goal, all saved by goalies RaeAnn Hovendick (two) and Kate Herron (one).
Marshfield outshot Waupaca 16-8, but couldn’t get one past Comets’ goalie Josee Waitrovich, who had 15 saves.
Waupaca scored with 1:26 remaining in regulation to grab the win. Hovendick had seven saves in goal for Marshfield.
In the third-place game, Julia Urban, Smith and Alison Gruen scored for the Tigers. Urban’s goal came just 1:30 into the game. She then assisted on Smith’s goal at the 11-minute mark and Gruen added an insurance goal with 11 minutes remaining in the game on an assist from Walker Guzowski.
Marshfield improves to 8-4-1 on the season and gets back into Wisconsin Valley Conference action this week with a pair of big games. The Tigers (5-2-1 in the Valley) host first-place Stevens Point on Thursday and second-place D.C. Everest on Friday. Both games start at 5 p.m. and will be played at Griese Park.
