COLBY – The Stratford boys and girls each finished second and had 29 overall sectional qualifiers at the WIAA Division 3 track and field regional on Monday at Colby High School.
Edgar won both team titles, with Stratford second in each. The Spencer girls were third, with Marshfield Columbus Catholic fifth and Auburndale sixth among the eight teams at the regional. Auburndale was fifth, Columbus sixth and Spencer seventh among the boys teams.
The Stratford girls had 15 sectional qualifiers and 14 boys that will move on to Rosholt on Thursday. The top four finishers in each event qualify for sectionals, and the top four at the sectional move on to the 2013 WIAA State Track and Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on May 31-June 1.
Among the Stratford boys qualifiers were four regional champions. Eli Temanson won both the pole vault (12 feet) and the 200 meters (23.79 seconds), Jacob Zuelke took first in the 1,600 (4:48.32) and the 800 relay team of Dylan Kell, Temanson, Phil Sersch and Kellen Bornbach won in 1:35.22.
Sersch (pole vault), Bornbach (100, shot put), Zuelke (3,200) and the 400 relay team of Kell, Temanson, Sersch and Jack Dahlstrom were also among the other boys qualifiers for the Tigers.
Auburndale had three boys qualify in six events. Tom Sabel was second in 100 and third in the triple jump and 200; Isaac Castellano won the 800 (2:04.58) and was second in the high jump; and Shane Brandl took fourth in the 400.
The Columbus Catholic boys had two relays and four individuals qualify for the sectional, led by Christian Payant, who won the 300 hurdles (42.37) and was on the 1,600 relay team along with Travis Wienke, Malcolm Pittsley and Samual Stundinger that took second (3:39.45). Pittsley also was second in the 200 and Wienke third in the 400.
The Spencer boys had four individuals and a relay move on. Tyler Stelson was second (45-4.25) and Spencer Susa took third (44-10.75) in the shot put.
The Stratford girls had three regional champions – Brooke Schultze in the high jump (4-10), MacKenzie Hannan in the shot put (34-6.75) and the 800 relay team of Schultze, Abby Bender, Tianna Hughes and Emily Hauke (1:49.46). Nadia King also qualified in two individual events (1,600, 3,200) and a relay.
Auburndale freshman Sylviann Momont had a great day for the Apaches, moving on to sectionals in four events. She won the long jump (17-5.75) and the triple jump (35-6), was second in the 100 (13.87) and was on the 800 relay team that finished third along with Josie Stoflet, Lakisha Sutton and Emma Steines. Steines (triple jump, 800) and Sutton (long jump) also qualified for the sectional.
The Columbus girls had one regional champion, the 400 relay team of Alexandra Hutchison, Rachel Roehl, Hannah Stratman and Kayla Selz (52.22). The same group also qualified in the 800 relay, as did Selz in the long jump, Hutchison in the 200, Hannah Kruse in the discus and Katie Weister in the 100.
Spencer sophomore Rachel Zastrow will move on in three events. She won the pole vault (8-0) and was third in the 100 hurdles (16.97) and 300 hurdles (49.82). Pagie Lawrence finished second in the 400 and the pole vault, and Jordyn Wichlacz qualified by taking fourth in the triple jump.
The WIAA Division 3 sectional will be at Rosholt High School on Thursday starting at 4 p.m.
