WAUSAU – Nick Janke struck out 12 and Wausau Newman Catholic held off a rally to defeat Marshfield Columbus Catholic 5-4 in a WIAA Division 4 baseball regional quarterfinal on Thursday at Athletic Park.
Newman led 5-2 after four innings before the Dons (1-12) scored twice in the fifth to close to within a run. However, Columbus couldn’t get another run across against Janke.
Jeremy Binder struck out nine and walked three for the Dons. Alex Larson had two of Columbus’ five hits.
Newman plays at No. 1 seed Rib Lake in a regional semifinal on Tuesday.
