ABBOTSFORD – Lucius Messerschmidt had four hits and Sam Schwanebeck was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs to lead the Marshfield Chaparrals baseball team to a 9-8 win over the Abbotsford Merchants on Friday night at Red Arrow Field.
The Chaparrals (3-1) lead 6-0 after 3½ innings and had to hold off a late rally by Abbotsford (1-6) to preserve the win.
The Merchants struck for four runs in the bottom of the eighth to get within a run, but Ryan Metz pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out the victory.
Eric Pritzl had two hits and scored twice, and Austin Littmann added a pair of hits for Marshfield.
Travis Opelt earned the victory for the Chaps, striking out six in seven innings.
Marshfield returns to action Tuesday at Everest.
