Spencer/Columbus football loses opener at Stanley-Boyd

STANLEY – Stanley-Boyd knocked off Spencer/Columbus Catholic 35-15 in the season opener for both football teams on Friday night at Stanley-Boyd High School.

Turnovers plagued both teams but ended up hurting Spencer/Columbus more.

The Rockets had six turnovers, including four by sophomore quarterback Calvin Lenz. He had two fumbles, one coming on the 1-yard line after a 26-yard run.

Tyler Voda had 21 carries for 98 yards and two touchdowns on offense, and recovered four fumbles and made five tackles on defense for S/C.

Lenz did throw for 155 yards, 60 of which went to Derrick Green on four catches.

Spencer Susa had nine tackles, including a sack, for the Rockets.

S/C trailed 20-15 after three quarters and had the ball, but turned it over. Stanley-Boyd went on to score a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.

The Rockets open their home schedule Aug. 30 against Neillsville.
