MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield volleyball team hosted its annual tournament to kick off the 2013 season Tuesday at Marshfield High School.
The Tigers went 2-2, finishing third in the five-team tournament.
Green Bay Notre Dame went a perfect 4-0 to win the title, with Wausau Newman Catholic second with a 3-1 mark. Antigo was 1-3 and Northland Pines finished 0-4.
Both of Marshfield’s losses came after it won the first game of the three-game matches.
Marshfield defeated Antigo 15-25, 25-21, 15-11; lost to Notre Dame 16-25, 25-16, 15-13; beat Northland Pines 25-11, 25-14; and finished with a loss to Wausau Newman 15-25, 25-22, 15-9.
“This is always a great tournament to start with, and I thought this year it was very competitive,” Marshfield coach Dawn Sadowska said. “Even though we have five seniors, our lineup has changed a lot from last year, and it will take a little while for things to run as smoothly as we would like.
“We saw improvement throughout the tournament, but also were able to see some things we need to work more on in practice.”
Courtney Bauer had 31 kills, 11 blocks and six service aces to lead Marshfield in all three categories.
Miranda Forrest added 16 kills, six aces and 26 digs, Stephanie Rhodes had 15 kills and seven blocks, and Tori Nanstad had 76 assists for Marshfield.
Defensively, Jenny Scheppler had 24 digs and Chelsea Akin added 20 digs for the Tigers.
Marshfield will compete at the Sun Prairie Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
