MARATHON – The Spencer volleyball team finished 4-1 and in second place Saturday at the Marathon Invitational.
The Rockets defeated Northland Lutheran 25-6, 25-9; Phillips 25-13, 25-13; Stratford 25-20, 25-16; and Fall Creek 25-13, 25-19, before losing to tournament champion Marathon 25-16, 25-21.
“”It was a pretty good day other than giving up a couple big runs to Marathon,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “We dug some early holes and couldn’t dig them out later. We can definitely build on this day.”
Tynae Phillips had 28 kills and seven blocks, and Marisa Johnson had 58 digs, 25 kills and eight service aces to lead Spencer.
Setter Brooke Kettleborough had a team-high 72 assists in the five matches, while Macie Weber led the Rockets with 11 blocks. Lindsey Vaughan added 49 digs and Julia Berres had six aces for Spencer.
Spencer is off until Sept. 12 when it hosts Neillsville in its Cloverbelt Conference East Division opener.
